The premise of a capsule wardrobe is simple: fewer pieces, more outfits. The execution is where people stall — usually because they start by throwing things away instead of by picking anchors.
Start with three anchors: dark straight-leg jeans, a white tee that fits properly (fit matters more than brand, always), and one layer you'd wear anywhere — a denim jacket if your life is casual, an unstructured blazer if it isn't. Everything else in the capsule has to work with all three.
From there, add in pairs: two knits (one light, one heavy), two shirts (one plain, one with character), two pairs of shoes (one clean sneaker, one dressier option), one pair of trousers that aren't denim, one coat that handles your actual climate, and one "wildcard" piece that's purely you. That's twelve, and it yields a month of outfits without repetition.
The discipline that makes it work: one in, one out. The capsule dies the day it becomes a capsule plus everything you already owned.
