The distance between "bought a drone" and "took a photo worth keeping" is about three decisions, and none of them are about megapixels.
First: learn the rules before the controls. In the US that means FAA basics — under 250g often exempts you from registration, but flying near airports, over crowds, or beyond visual line of sight doesn't care how small your drone is. Ten minutes on the FAA's B4UFLY resources saves you a genuinely expensive conversation later.
Second: fly boring before you fly pretty. Your first sessions should be an empty field and nothing else — practice hovering, slow rotations, and the return-to-home function until they're muscle memory. Every viral drone crash video is someone who skipped this step.
Third: shoot at the edges of the day. Midday drone shots look flat because the light comes from directly above — the same reason phone photos at noon disappoint. Golden hour gives landscapes shadow and depth, and it's when that 4K sensor actually earns its spec sheet.
Start with those three and the fancy techniques — orbits, reveals, hyperlapses — come surprisingly fast.
